Galvanized Steel vs Galvalume Steel: Which One Actually Protects Your Home Better?
Which of galvanized steel or galvalume steel actually provides better protection for your home?
Galvanized or Galvalume? See which steel coating really protects your home from rust, heat, and monsoon damage with real answers, not lab claims.
The difference, without any sales pitch.
What Is Galvanized Steel?
Galvanized steel is given a layer of pure zinc by means of a hot dip process. It has one feature that makes it suitable for use on doors: it is sacrificial. When the surface is scratched, nicked or drilled which occurs all the time during installation, when the hinges are fitted and as a result of normal daily use the zinc at that location corrodes first and thus protects the steel underneath that is exposed. This is known as cathodic protection and is the same principle that has been used for decades to protect the hulls of ships and underground pipelines.
What Is Galvalume Steel?
In Galvalume, most of the zinc is replaced with aluminium (about 55% aluminium and 43.5% zinc); aluminium resists corrosion effectively when the surface is flat and continuous which is the reason why Galvalume is widely used for roofing sheets that are never cut or drilled after they have been installed.
But a door is not a roofing sheet. The Cut-Edge Problem Nobody Talks About:
In simple terms: If you want a durable, cost-effective steel that offers proven protection with minimal maintenance, galvanized steel is often the smart choice. Each steel door has to be cut, welded, and drilled holes being made for locks, hinges, and panels as well as frames. This results in sharp, raw edges. And it is precisely here that Galvalume falls down: aluminium is not able to self-heal exposed edges as zinc can. When the cut edge is exposed to the humidity of Tamil Nadu or to the salt air near the coast, corrosion seeps in from that spot, usually without being visible, underneath the paint.
Galvanized steel deals with this on its own, the zinc layer continuing to protect the cut and drilled edges for many years, which is the reason it stays the industry standard for the manufacture of doors and windows not only in India but all over the world.
Why Galvanized Steel Wins for Indian Homes
Built for humidity and monsoons zinc's self-healing protection works continuously, not just on the surface
Coastal ready better resistance at welds, cuts, and drill points, where salt air does the most damage
Field-repairable — dents or minor damage can be touched up without compromising the protective layer
Proven, not experimental decades of real-world use in doors, gates, and structural steel across every Indian climate zone
The Duroguard Standard
Each Duroguard steel door employs galvanised steel for this specific reason it isn't tested in a laboratory brochure but is instead tested in more than 15,000 houses all over South India, over the real monsoons, in the actual coastal air, and under real daily use. That is what makes the difference between a door which looks good on day one and one which still locks smoothly on day 3,650.
